If I am making an image of a place, a person or any other subject, where practical, I like to start from direct observation. I may also use photographs to help gather visual information for further work back at home in my studio.
Some commissions have worked well, however, when I was not able to gather reference images first hand, with material sent digitally. Using a still photograph and video of the subject in the pose and in a more relaxed situation helps me to create what I believe to be a more natural likeness than is often achieved when working from a single still image.
